CASS COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES $87,000 IN FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR LOCAL NON-PROFITS

Community

The Cass County Community Foundation is pleased to announce that an even greater pool of community grant funds will be available to Cass County non-profits for the 2012 Competitive Community Grant process. CCCF President Deanna Crispen has announced that the Foundation has made up to $87,000 available for this year’s grants cycle. When making the announcement, Crispen stated, “Our board has continued to work diligently to grow our funds so that every year we can offer more back to the community for important projects. This year’s $87,000 pool marks the seventh consecutive year that the Foundation has increased the amount available and is almost double the amount available ten years ago. We are especially excited to be able to offer the increase in funds when the economy has hurt so many of our non-profit organizations.”

Thanks to generous donations from Cass County citizens, as well as effective stewardship and financial management of unrestricted funds, CCCF has continued to consistently meet the community’s needs through awarding grants. Non-profit, 501(c) (3) organizations serving Cass County are encouraged to apply for grants designed for projects which benefit the community and improve the quality of life in Cass County.

A FREE grant-writing workshop will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday May 24th at the LEDF Community Room, 310 Pearl Street, downtown Logansport and will last less than one hour. While attendance at the workshop is not mandatory, it is strongly recommended for non-profit organizations who are applying for grants, particularly those with no prior grant-writing experience. Those planning to attend should call CCCF at 574-722-2200 for reservations.

Grant applications may be picked up at the CCCF office, 417 North Street, downtown Logansport, or downloaded from the Foundation website (www.casscountycf.org) after the workshop. The deadline to return completed grant applications is 5:00p.m. on June 29, 2012. For information about the application process, contact the CCCF office at 574-722-2200.

Applicants were required to have an SAT score of at least 1100 or an ACT score of at least 24, as well as a 3.5 or higher GPA. All identifying details, such as student’s name, gender, and school name, were removed from the applications prior to review. Six finalists were selected based solely on the criteria, which include academic ability, achievements, activities and citizenship. The finalists then participated in further review, which included writing an impromptu timed essay, followed by a face-to-face interview session with the selection committee. After completing the selection process, the CCCF Lilly Scholarship Committee submitted the names of the 2012 nominees to the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for final approval.

ICI is a non-profit corporation that represents thirty-one regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program is a result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor’s degree. There were 142 Lilly scholarships awarded statewide.

“GROWING LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCES”

Cass County Community Foundation President Deanna Crispen announced the renewal of a Foundation pilot scholarship award program today which had a very positive impact on many local organizations and students during the last two summers.

The Glove Program, “Growing Local Opportunities for Volunteer Experiences”, is a CCCF initiative which began in 2010 in response to the very rough economy and the effect the economy had on our local non-profits. The Foundation established the GLOVE Awards to assist returning college students who may have difficulty finding a summer job to help pay for their schooling and to promote volunteerism as a desirable activity for learning about our community. Through the program, students may apply at the end of summer for the awards if they meet the following criteria.

*Enrolled in college for Fall 2012
*2.5 cumulative collegiate GPA
*100 hours or more of community volunteerism during summer 2012
*One page or less short essay about their summer volunteer experience
*Excellent character and moral integrity

The number and amount of awards will depend on the number of participants Crispen shared, but it is anticipated that the minimum award will be $500 and maximum $1000 up to $25,000 in total awards.

“This will be the third year for the innovative program which is open to any traditional age Cass County college student who has completed at least one year. Eligible students must be undergraduate students and enrolled for the fall semester to apply,” Crispen stated.

Interested students should contact the Community Foundation for specific guidelines and timelines to participate and should remember that their volunteer activity must be with a bona fide organization. Some possible projects include, designing websites, tutoring, mentoring, gardening and translation.

Crispen praised the CCCF board for their commitment to continue the initiative and stated, “We are always excited to offer scholarships for our deserving students and help them meet the high costs of education. The board is hopeful that students who participate will have a great experience to add to their resume as well as make contacts for future references and that some of our most needy organizations will get some great volunteers this summer!”
