Phyllis Kingery Leaves a $200,000 Legacy of Love for the Community

Phyllis Kingery Leaves a $200,000 Legacy of Love for the CommunityYou would be hard-pressed to find anyone who loved Cass County more than Phyllis Kingery. Phyllis did not grow up here but Cass County was her home after marrying Charles in 1960. Phyllis, a school teacher, and Charles, a banker, led a life of community service and the two of them set out to make their corner of the world a better place for all. When Charles passed away unexpectedly in 2000, it was up to Phyllis to continue their commitment of a life for others.

Phyllis Kingery, who passed away in February of this year, was well-known throughout the community as an avid volunteer and philanthropist. Her interests were wide and her passion for the local community ran deep. Whether it was through her career as a teacher, hosting a fundraiser for the Community Foundation, or selling tickets for her sorority’s chicken noodle dinner, Phyllis was always leading the charge and challenging others to give.

It was no surprise then that in her will she named more than 20 local organizations to receive bequests from her estate. The bequests ranged from $1,000 to the more than $80,000 received by the Cass County Community Foundation. The funds to most organizations were for general support but the funds bequeathed to CCCF were dedicated to increase the Charles and Phyllis Kingery Scholarship Fund as well as endow another permanent unrestricted fund named for the Kingerys.

Organizations touched by Phyllis’s generosity and giving heart include: The Cass County Community Foundation, Logansport Shrine Club, Cass County Arts Alliance, Cass County Carousel, River of Life Christian Church, Cass County Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Performing Arts Council, Civic Players, Special Olympics, Mental Health Cass County, Logansport Art Association, Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation, Emmaus Mission, Cass County 4H, Elks Lodge #66, Neal Home, Cass County Heart Association, Cass County Humane Society, A Cause for Paws, and the Cass County Family YMCA.

Phyllis Kingery was a Cass County treasure who set a shining example of living a life, “For Good, For Ever, For Others.”  Her generosity will live on through the good works she has funded.
